You don’t need to wait for “specialized resources” when you can throw a line and/or flotation device (both present) to someone that’s drowning. Whose life would that have endangered? Worst yet, if you aren’t going to even lift a finger to assist, don’t prohibit others that are willing to help.

This is common sense and any argument by the City to the contrary is pure conjecture and unconvincing.

DA Charme Allen created this situation and should be embarrassed by her actions and blatant misrepresentations to this family. More importantly, she knows it.

When DA Allen made the misrepresentations to the media and to the family perhaps she thought she weathered the storm and nobody would call her on it, but that is not the case here and will not be the case going forward.

On April 1, 2021 WATE 6 news called my office pleading with front office staff to get in touch with me to see if I would please provide them a statement from the perspective of a Civil Rights Plaintiff's attorney in regards to a story they were preparing to run pertaining to the Knoxville Police Department's announcement that their trial run has ended and that ALL KPD officers were now equipped with body worn cameras. Although I was out of town, I emailed a statement over to WATE 6 as instructed so they could include in their story.

While WATE 6 news included statements from all governmental folks, including Chief Eve Thomas, Mayor Kinncannon, and even KPD's "police technology manager," whatever that means, they failed to include my statement/any other perspective so I am going to share it now because it turns out it is exactly what has transpired, i.e, more stonewalling from KPD. Thankfully, folks at the Knoxville News Sentinel get it..see recent article below.

WATE 6, if you don't want to report facts and both sides of an argument, just be honest about it. Don't waste my time when you you are nothing but a mouth piece touting KPD's "accomplishments" and policies they don't intend to follow or be transparent about.

Statement from two weeks ago:

“While it is long overdue, the implementation of body cameras for KPD officers is a positive step in the right direction, but this is by no means a cure all. That said, if the goal of KPD is transparency they must ensure that these videos are made available to the media and the public, especially attorneys representing individuals in civil rights matters. The body cameras are only relevant to officer accountability if people other than KPD supervisors are allowed to view the footage. In the end, if that is the result then it compromises and undermines the entire intent of wearing them in the first place.”

"If the truth doesn't get out, rumor will fill the vacuum," said Deborah Fisher, executive director of the Tennessee Coalition for Open Government.
