Starting law school? Here are 5 legal differences every student should know before diving in:

1. Civil Law vs Criminal Law-
Civil law: Resolves disputes between individuals, businesses, or organizations
Criminal law: Involves offenses against the state and potential penalties like fines or imprisonment.

2. Plaintiff vs. Defendant-
Plaintiff: The person or party who brings a civil lawsuit.
Defendant: The person or party responding to the claim or accusation.

3. Substantive Law vs. Procedural Law-
Substantive law: Defines rights, duties, and legal obligations.
Procedural law: Establishes the process and rules courts follow when handling cases.

4. Statute vs. Case Law-
Statute: A law passed by a legislative body.
Case law: Law developed through judicial decisions and interpretations.

5. Holding vs. Dicta-
Holding: The court’s legal decision that is necessary to resolve the case.
Obiter dicta: Statements or observations made by a judge that are not essential to the decision.
