CLIENT: Can you give me a free quote❓

ME: Sure I can

CLIENT: Ok, what you need to get started❓

ME: I will need you to fill out our Client Intake Form 📋 to ensure we give you an accurate quote, and I would need you to submit your supporting documents since it’s required by the IRS. I’ll send you the link so you can get started.

CLIENT: Well the preparer from last year didn’t ask me anything I just sent her my stuff and I got my money 💰‼️

ME: Well because you weren’t dealing with a professional you weren’t dealing with an IRS Registered Tax Return Preparer‼️
Let me ask you this, Is your prior year tax return signed ✍🏻 by the preparer that did your taxes❓

CLIENT: Im not sure but I think so let me check, Where do I look for their signature ✍🏻❓

ME: Look all the way at the bottom of page 2 of your 1040, where it says Paid Preparer and if your return was sent electronically then look at the bottom of Form 8879 Part 3.

CLIENT: I checked and I don’t have a signature ✍🏻 on the 1040 I only see the self prepared box checked off.

ME: Oh I see you dealt with a Ghost 👻 Preparer. Meaning someone who doesn't sign ✍🏻 tax returns they prepare. Unscrupulous ghost 👻 preparers often print the return and have the taxpayer to sign ✍🏻 and mail it to the IRS.
For e-filed returns, the ghost preparer will prepare but refuse to digitally sign ✍🏻 as the paid preparer.
Not signing ✍🏻 a return is a red flag 🚩 that the paid preparer may be looking to make a quick profit 💰 by promising a big refund 💰or charging fees based on the size of the refund.

CLIENT: Omg really I didn’t know. So what’s going to happen to me now.

ME: Well if the IRS decides to audit your taxes your resposible for all the information on your tax return.

CLIENT: But half of the information on there I have no clue where they got it from because I didn’t send that. I tried calling them and they are not answering my calls or texts.

ME: My advice is to amend your return meaning do your taxes again with the correct information and find yourself someone that can represent you in front of the IRS if you happens to get audited.

CLIENT: Thank you for the information but I still want to get a free quote with you.

ME: Your welcome. As long as you fill out the Client Intake Form and submit your supporting documents along with a copy of your prior year return.

CLIENT: Ok I will, May I have the link to get started.

ME: Of course. I’ll send it to you now.

Friendly reminder…

If you let your “Tax Preparer” convince you to do some s**t you know you don’t qualify for to get you a bigger tax refund, you are still 💯% responsible for EVERYTHING on that tax return.

IRS doesn’t care that ”you didn’t know” or that “it didn’t sound bad”.
