Today, May 1st, we proudly joined thousands of legal professionals nationwide for National Law Day to stand together for the rule of law by reaffirming our professional oath, emphasizing the duty to protect the Constitution. Joined by our friend, Carolyn Schaefer at WeTrust Co., we had the opportunity to see speak on the importance of rebuilding trust in the legal system. ⚖

This month we celebrate International Women’s History Month! KBK is proud to be an all-women firm, and to represent an amazing set of clients from all walks of life. We hope to honor women like:
- Marija Milutinović, the first female attorney in modern history in 1847, Serbia, who exclusively practiced pro bono for charity.
- Arabella Mansfield, the first woman to be admitted to a US State Bar in 1869, despite Iowa restricting the bar exam to only “males over 21”.
- Charlotte E. Ray, the first black American woman to practice law in 1872, and eventually argued in front of the federal District of Columbia Supreme Court.

At KBK, we tailor your Estate Plan to your specific needs and wishes, so the process for every estate plan is a little bit different! We like to hit the ground running in your first meeting, so once you book your first appointment with an attorney, you’ll receive a Questionnaire to fill out and send back before the meeting. This covers your general information for your attorney to review and pinpoint the needs you may not have thought of, such as tax planning or connecting you to financial advisors. Your attorney will spend the first meeting getting to know you, your situation, and what you would like to see happen after your passing. Then, we get to work on your documents. If you have any changes, edits, or questions on the drafts, we get those done before we schedule a final meeting to come in and sign your documents. We provide the witnesses and notary, so all you need is your signature!

Ever wonder how people in movies inherit from long-lost relatives they didn’t even know? This could be due to the “laws of intestacy”, and a third niece-twice-removed is the only heir left! As with most legal issues, every state’s laws are different. In Washington, when someone passes away without a Will, we say they have passed “intestate;” while “testate” implies they had a Will. During an intestate probate, for example, the closest relative may serve as Personal Representative. Don’t want to risk your annoying cousin inheriting part of your estate? Be sure to create a thorough estate plan outlining who will inherit!
