Here are a few notable astronomical phenomena happening this month, plus upcoming GRAAA events.
✨ We've got two meteor showers peaking in August! The Perseid meteor shower will be active from July 17 to August 24, producing its peak rate of meteors around August 12; the κ-Cygnid meteor shower will be active from August 3-25, peaking around August 18. Seen from Grand Rapids, both meteor showers' radiant points are circumpolar, which means they are always above the horizon and the showers will be active throughout the night. At their peak, the Perseid shower is expected to produce ~150 meteors per hour and the κ-Cygnid shower will only produce about 2-3 meteors per hour.
✨ On August 12, Venus and Jupiter will make a close approach, visible in the dawn sky in the constellation Gemini. From Grand Rapids, the pair will rise around 3:45am. Try viewing them through a pair of binoculars before they fade from view as dawn breaks.
✨ The globular cluster M15 in Pegasus will be well-placed for observing in the evening sky in the coming weeks. On August 14 it will reach its highest point in the sky around midnight, cluminating four minutes earlier each subsequent evening. From Grand Rapids, it is visible all night, and can be viewed through a pair of binoculars or a small telescope.
📆 We have two more Public Observing Nights in August on the 16th and 30th, and we will welcome back the final of three Riverside Raconteurs storytelling events on Friday August 22.
