The issue of driving comes up frequently with clients who are assisting aging parents. Hereโs some good information to consider.
Traffic Tip Tuesday: Do you know someone who is aging and may not be safe to drive a vehicle anymore? Have you had the courage to discuss this with them?
With increasing age come changes in physical, mental and sensory abilities that can challenge a person's continued ability to drive safely. One of the first steps in addressing older driver safety is having a nonthreatening conversation.
Family and friends play a major role in discussions about older driver safety. There are options available to help keep the skills needed to be an independent driver. If that is no longer a safe option, discuss transportation options with them. They may feel that they will not be able to go anywhere if they can no longer drive and may not be aware of how they can stay active in their communities without driving.
If you feel they are an unsafe driver and poses a risk to themselves or others, you can use the form DDS Form 270. This form can be used by law enforcement, concerned community members, or others to initiate the medical revocation process. The driver MUST work with the DMV to prove they are still capable to drive safely. Link to more information and the form can be found here: https://dds.georgia.gov/medical-review-process
