Scott's Towing & Hauling LLC speaking the truth here.
Many people believe that having “full coverage” means they are protected if they’re hit by someone with no insurance or too little insurance. That is incorrect. The protection you need for that situation is uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage (UIM).
UIM is one line of coverage that protects you if the at-fault driver has no insurance or not enough insurance to fully compensate you.
In Alaska, the minimum required bodily injury coverage is $50,000. That may sound like a lot — until an ambulance ride, imaging, ER care, follow-ups, and physical therapy consume it quickly. And that’s assuming the injuries are relatively modest. If someone causes permanent injury, $50,000 disappears fast.
While some drivers carry no insurance at all, it’s far more common for drivers to carry only the minimum limits. That is where people get hurt twice — once in the crash, and again financially.
We’re in the business of holding insurance companies accountable, not selling policies. But one piece of advice I consistently give clients, friends, and family is this: carry as much UIM coverage as you can reasonably afford.
If someone changes your life permanently, minimum limits will feel very small.
