Hey! It’s History Friday!

This week we have a photo of the Teddy Roosevelt Highway, circa 1930, and the same highway now known as US-HWY 2, circa 2025. The photos were taken right next to the Snowy Springs Outfitters headquarters; A horseback riding service.

Highway 2 is a familiar route for those near Glacier National Park. It grants access between West and East Glacier when the Going to the Sun Road is closed. Before 1930, crossing the park meant traveling by train, foot, or horseback. Automobiles had to detour 100 miles or pay to have their car ferried across the Continental Divide by freight train.

In 1930, the Theodore Roosevelt Highway (now U.S. Highway 2) opened, offering a year-round route over the Divide. Though not as scenic as the Going-to-the-Sun Road, Highway 2 still offers views of Glacier’s peaks like Jackson and Stimson. You cross Marias Pass, and you might spot mountain goats at Goat Lick Overlook.
