I once heard during a hearing from a nursing home administrator that it was standard for residents to wait 30-45 minutes for someone to get them to a bathroom. Anyone who has to use the restroom knows that amount of time is absurd.

We litigate nursing home neglect, exploitation and abuse cases. Often, there are no other homes or space available to move loved ones to safernursing homes. When loved ones are near the end of their time on Earth, they deserve to pass with dignity. They deserve proper hydration, food, bathing and medical treatment. They do not deserve to lay in their soiled pants and bedding, experience painful bedsores, or have their money stolen.

Here are some helpful suggestions if you have a loved on in a nursing home and are unhappy with the treatment and lack of care:

1. Write the concerns down and send certified mail to the nursing home administrator;

2. Take photographs and video of the room if it is unsafe and/or dirty;

3. Call the state and file a complaint along with contacting the local ombudsman;

4. Take photographs of bed sores and any other physical abuse;

5. Continue to look for other places to relocate your loved one and;

6. Call an attorney ASAP before your loved one passes to discuss your options.
