This summer, a 45-foot wooden boat built in Kalispell turns 100 years old — and it's still carrying passengers on St. Mary Lake in Glacier National Park.

The Little Chief is the crown jewel of Glacier Park Boat Co.'s fleet, the first Montana vessel listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and a living piece of the park's history.

The weather is turning pleasant and the bears and starting to venture. With that being said, please be bear aware when hiking, fishing and exploring Montana's wild country.

A few easy ways to stay prepared:
• Make noise—talk, clap or call out along the trail to avoid surprising a bear.
• Carry bear spray and keep it within quick reach.
• Travel in groups when you can.
• Store food and scented items securely and pack out all trash.
• Stay observant for signs of wildlife like tracks or s**t.
• Always keep a safe distance and never approach bears.
• Keep dogs leashed to prevent unwanted encounters.
