Some dogs are just good dogs… and right now, in a time when intakes are up and adoptions are down, being a good dog doesn’t seem like it’s enough. Good dogs are continually overlooked and many good dogs, here on our island and everywhere, are losing their lives because of _________. (Politics? Economy? Lack of education? You fill in the blank.)

The reality is that in today’s animal welfare crisis, we desperately need the good dogs to go home, so we can save more good dogs. At Hawaii Island Humane Society, we have the privilege of not having to euthanize animals for time nor space. But time and space aren’t the only factors and our animals are not the only animals. We know that 1) the dogs in our care are at risk of declining as their time in a shelter gets longer and longer - they deserve to be in a home and 2) our partners, Hawai’i County Animal Control, do not have a choice when it comes to euthanizing for time or space… because there isn’t enough time, and there isn’t enough space, and there are too many animals.

Good dogs like Mia need to go home. Mia might be one of the lucky ones. She was found roaming on Stainback Hwy and brought to Hawai’i County Animal Control. When no one came to claim her, she was seen and saved. We met her, enjoyed her goofy temperament, and knew that we could give Mia a chance.

So Mia got her chance… but then what? For the past 78 days, Mia has lived at the Keaau Shelter, waiting to be noticed and waiting to be adopted. Mia is a nice dog. Her friends describe her as affectionate, smart, friendly, and curious.

Awwww. Somebody Adopt this precious chocolate babeee 🐾🐾

*update, adopted!*
Baby Mikaela is still looking for her new family! She was tossed over the Rainbow Friends fence earlier this month and is just a puppy, maybe 3 months old. Her photos are deceiving - she is SMALL at maybe 20lbs. She is gentle and good with all animals, including cats and chickens. A few folks who showed interest in her have fallen through, so contact us to meet her!

Adopt Dunkin ! 🐶🐾🐾♥️

Dunkin’ is a little dog with a big personality. He spent a LOT of time in our care, woo’ing staff, volunteers, and his Field Trip friends.

Dunkin’s friends would describe him as happy, energetic, confident, and active.

But today, after 174 days of waiting, our favorite little dude can add one more adjective to the list: ✨ADOPTED✨!

We’re stoked for Dunkin’ who now has a dad of his very own. Their new life together will include healthy foods, companionship, adventures, and watching movies together.
