Today marked the final chapter of the inaugural Joplin Police Department/McPherson Law Firm Felony Expungement Clinic. A total of 24 lives were changed today. I am so grateful that Chief Pearson approached us with the idea for this project. While we have done a substantial number of private expungements, there is a demographic that simply cannot afford to pay the attorney’s fees required to clear their past felony conviction. Unfortunately, the public defender’s office does not do expungements. Our clinic filled this need by providing free expungements to non-violent offenders that did not exceed a certain income threshold.
Our firm volunteered to do the clinic because we love the personal satisfaction of doing something for a fellow human being that can literally change the trajectory of their future. Quite a few tears were shed today, particularly when one of the participants asked to address the court during her hearing. She stated that she had made a mistake in 1988 (I believe it was failure to return rental property) that she had lived with ever since. She now has stage-4 cancer and the top item on her bucket list was clearing her name and reputation before Jesus called her home. There wasn’t a dry eye in the courtroom.
We want to thank everyone that made the clinic a success. We came out of this process with a streamlined operation for future clinics. You can follow our McPherson Law Firm Faceook page for announcements on future expungement clinics.
