Memorial Day isn’t just cookouts, lake weekends, and the unofficial start of summer.

As we fire up the BBQ today or prepare for tomorrow’s official remembrance, here are a few facts that surprised me:

🇺🇸 Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day because people decorated the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers.

🇺🇸 The first large national observance happened on May 30, 1868, at Arlington National Cemetery.

🇺🇸 Memorial Day was first created to honor soldiers lost in the Civil War, but later expanded to honor all U.S. military members who died in service.

🇺🇸 Waterloo, New York is officially recognized as the birthplace of Memorial Day.

🇺🇸 Red poppies became a symbol of remembrance after World War I, inspired by the poem In Flanders Fields.

🇺🇸 At 3:00 PM local time, Americans are encouraged to pause for the National Moment of Remembrance.

🇺🇸 The American flag is traditionally flown at half-staff until noon on Memorial Day.

🇺🇸 More than 1 million American service members have died serving our country throughout U.S. history.

Tomorrow we remember the people behind those numbers. ❤️

Not me aggressively excited to go see a movie today.

But if you’d like your home buying experience to feel like surviving an asteroid field with no map, no backup, and one concerning Zillow estimate…

Try this:

🚀 Fall in love with the house before checking the payment
🚀 Open a new credit card because “it’s only Target”
🚀 Ignore lender emails for 4–6 business months
🚀 Assume online estimates know more than humans
🚀 Skip inspections because “the seller seems honest”

Somewhere in the middle of May I’m pretty sure most of us have survived entirely on caffeine, calendar notifications, and pure adrenaline.

‘WHY are there 17 people parked outside the open house before it even starts?’ 😂

Buying a house in 2026 is basically financial Hunger Games with throw pillows.

Everybody’s stressed.
Everybody’s confused.
Everybody’s pretending they totally understand escrow.

Meanwhile your Realtor is over here explaining:
• interest rates
• inspections
• appraisals
• contingencies
• and why the house with the “cute character” smell is actually mold.

This is why having the RIGHT Realtor matters.
Because Google can tell you what a contingency is.

Google cannot stop you from emotionally attaching yourself to a house with foundation issues and one bathroom for six people.
