LEGAL TERM OF THE DAY: SETTLEMENT

Not every legal dispute needs a courtroom finale.
A settlement is an agreement between parties to resolve a legal dispute without continuing through trial. Depending on the circumstances, it may involve one party paying money, both sides agreeing to certain terms, or a combination of both.

Think of it as finding a legal off-ramp before the case reaches the finish line.

Why does it matter?
Settlements can help parties:
Avoid the uncertainty of trial
Reduce legal costs and time
Have more control over the outcome
Resolve a dispute privately

Of course, settling is not always the right choice. The best path depends on the facts, risks, and goals of each case.

LEGAL TERM OF THE DAY: OBJECTION
You have probably heard it in every courtroom drama: “Objection!”

But what does it actually mean?

An objection is a formal statement made by an attorney during a legal proceeding when they believe a question, piece of evidence, or statement violates the rules of evidence or procedure.

Think of it as an attorney saying, “That should not be allowed here.”

Common objections include:
Hearsay
Relevance
Leading the witness
Speculation

The judge then decides whether to sustain the objection or overrule it.

Legal Term of the Day: TORT
It may sound like "torte," but a tort isn't dessert, it's a legal wrong.

A tort is a wrongful act that causes harm to another person and may give the injured person the right to seek compensation in court.

Example: Car accidents, slip-and-fall injuries, medical malpractice, and defamation are all examples of situations that may involve tort law.
Tort law is designed to help people recover when they've been harmed by someone else's actions or negligence.
