First-time home buyer in NJ? Here’s what I want you to know before you fall in love with a house in Hudson County.
Your first home should fit your life, not your Pinterest board.
What should a first-time buyer in Hudson County actually look for? Not the things Pinterest shows you.
I have walked through homes with first-time buyers in Jersey City, Bayonne, and Hoboken who saved pins of an aesthetic, then stood in a kitchen that matched every single one. They stood there quiet. The kitchen was beautiful. It also did not fit how they actually live.
A first home has to work on a Tuesday morning, not in a styled photograph.
Pinterest cannot show you that the parking spot is two blocks away. Pinterest cannot show you the island that gets in the way of every meal you actually make. Pinterest cannot show you the train you cannot hear during the open house but will hear at 11 p.m. when the window is open.
Here is what I want you to do before you fall in love.
1. Know what you can comfortably afford each month. Not what the lender approved. What you actually want to spend after groceries, taxes, parking, and the night out you would not give up.
2. Shop more than one mortgage. Rates matter. Fees matter more than most people realize.
3. Tour homes with your life in mind. Where do you put the laundry. Where does the dog sleep. Where does the car park in February. Where does the coffee cup go before work.
4. When you find the one you like, make the offer. You can change a house. You cannot change its location.
I help first-time home buyers in Hudson County, NJ understand the numbers, the neighborhoods, and the trade-offs before they sign anything. If you are buying your first home in Jersey City, Bayonne, Hoboken, or anywhere in Hudson County, send me a message. I tell you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear.
