It is always a humbling feeling to find out that we have won the River Reporter’s Best Lawyer award. The great Roman lawyer and statesman Marcus Tullius Cicero said that gratitude is the mother of all virtue. The Apostle Paul taught and retaught the essence of the gospel of Jesus Christ, we are saved by grace and, therefore, must live by faith, producing works of love and service. For Paul, love humbly serves in gratitude for gifts we could never earn. And therefore Paul and Cicero come to the same conclusion, gratitude is the foundation of all true piety.

So today, we gather for feasting, family, and football. We might end up across the table with people whom we know we know we love but are not so sure we like. Remember that true thanksgiving is self-giving. In an age of pride, self-love, and self-care, let’s esteem each other as the most important. Thanksgiving is humble gratitude. The irony of Thanksgiving is that if we start acting like we love each other, we might actually find that we really do love each other. America needs authentic Thanksgiving now more than ever. Feast well, and Happy Thanksgiving!
