On May 7, the Missouri State Highway Patrol Patrol’s Brandon Harris had just completed his shift and was home when he heard radio traffic about an ongoing pursuit of an armed driver wanted in a homicide. Brandon joined Columbia Police and Boone County Sheriff’s deputies in the pursuit. He is trained in tactical vehicle intervention (TVI), which is a controlled maneuver used by officers to spin out a fleeing vehicle when safe to do so. Because of his TVI training, the other responding officers let Brandon move to the lead pursuit position. He quickly and safely executed a TVI. As the fleeing vehicle spun out, the gunman fired several rounds into Brandon’s vehicle, including one that shattered the driver window. The gunman was found deceased in his vehicle from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Brandon had quickly ended the risk posed by an armed homicide suspect involved in a pursuit that traveled over 25 miles from Columbia to Randolph County. Brandon disregarded the risks to himself and always maintained his composure, despite this high-stress pursuit and even gunfire entering his vehicle.

• 29% – Failed To Yield
• 13% – Following Too Close
• 13% – Improper Lane Usage / Change
• 10% – Distracted / Inattentive Driving
• 10% – Failure to Obey Signs, Signals, or Officers
• 6% – Too Fast For Conditions
• 4% – Improper Turns
• 4% – Vision Obstructed
• 2% each – Alcohol, Vehicle Defects, Improper Backing, Animals in Roadway, and Other causes.

Over 75% of these accidents are entirely preventable by simply staying focused, slowing down, and sharing the road properly.
Let's work together to bring these numbers down. Put the phone away, keep a safe following distance, and always yield the right of way. Your safety—and the safety of everyone else on the road—depends on it.
