Delta 4819, operating as Endeavor Air 4819, a Canadair Regional Jet CRJ-900, from Minneapolis to Toronto flipped during landing in Toronto.
Our initial reaction is that this is a miracle that there was no loss of life. When reviewing the video of the landing, it is apparent that there is a strong crosswind from the right. The aircraft does not appear to flare and is maintaining its vertical speed from the descent. When landing in snowy conditions, pilots can often perceive their aircraft to be higher than it actually is due to a phenomenon called "whiteout" or "flat light," where the lack of visual contrast between the snow-covered ground and the sky makes it difficult to judge distance and altitude. In the video, the right wing drags and when it detaches, the jet continues the right roll until it is inverted.
UPDATE: Delta is apparently offering passengers of Delta 4819 $30,000. An email from the Delta Care Team is telling customers the money is a gesture that comes with “no strings attached…” Thoele Drach Law represents victims of air disasters and their families and guides them through the arduous process ahead.. The firm is currently also investigating the midair collision of another Canadair Regional Jet, American Eagle Flight 5342 on approach to Reagan National with PAT25 an Army H-60 Blackhawk helicopter. Justin Drach is a former Naval Aviator with more than ten years of military service and holds an Airline Transport Pilot rating in the Airbus A320 along with an experimental authorization in former Soviet jet aircraft. Justin has experience flying combat aircraft such as the S-3B Viking, T-45C Goshawk, and the F/A-18C Hornet. As a graduate of the Naval School of Aviation Safety and designated an Aviation Safety Officer, he is qualified to investigate aviation mishaps.
As a Naval Aviator trained to conduct crash investigations by the U.S. Navy’s School of Aviation Safety, no other aviation attorney brings his specific credentials and abilities to a case where passengers are injured. Obtaining the evidence and then meticulously examining a mishap to determine who was ultimately liable is crucial, especially when up against a short statute of limitations and government red tape. Don’t choose a non-pilot, a private pilot, a pilot that has no experience in test and experimental aircraft, one who doesn’t have instructor experience, one without military experience, or one that has not been properly trained in mishap investigations.
