As I sit on the floor today, packing for a mommy-daughter trip, I can’t help but think about the times I used to scoop up my own mom and take her on a spontaneous getaway. ❤️

She wasn’t always eager to go. Sometimes, I had to convince her to step outside her comfort zone. But before long, we would find ourselves laughing, making memories, and enjoying time together that neither of us would forget.

Now, as I look at my own daughter, I hope to give her those same experiences. She’s still a child, but I hope these little adventures become part of her story. And one day, when I’m older, perhaps she’ll be the one scooping me up, insisting we go somewhere new, and creating a few more memories together. 🥹

Because legacy isn’t just about the money you leave behind. It’s about the memories you create, the traditions you pass down, the values you instill, and the stories your family will tell long after you’re gone.

Make the memories. Take the trip. Say yes to the moments that become family stories.

Because the greatest legacy is one that lives on through the people we love. 🌳

☕ Mornings with Your Estate Planning Attorney - Super Hero Edition

Every morning the Kuruvilla home is quiet. I'm the first to wake and I love my morning coffee. The combination of quiet and coffee gives me time to think. I review my meetings for the day, think about my clients from the previous day - who did I help? Is there anything more I can do to give someone peace of mind? Do we need to send a family a sympathy card? Did we follow up with a client that was nervous about funding her trust?

The quiet around me certainly doesn't equate to a quiet mind, but that's what I do. As your estate planning attorney, I think about the 'what ifs' and 'what's next' so you don't have to be concerned.

15 years ago, I learned a lesson about planning for the unexpected… 😂

Skiing with lessons… $120
Rocky Mountain National Park… $20
Sled rentals… $10
Walking away from skiing uninjured, only to tear the tendons in my finger sledding down a small hill because I wanted to go “just one more time”… PRICELESS.

Life doesn’t always go according to plan. We can’t prevent every accident or unexpected event - but we can make sure the people we love have a plan when something happens.

Expecting the unexpected? Impossible.
Planning for it? Priceless.

What does a table full of sugary cereal have to do with estate planning? More than you might think.

For my birthday, we did something completely out of the ordinary at our house.

My kids wanted to try all of our family’s favorite childhood cereals - the ones we grew up eating and still remember decades later. Normally, I’m the mom making sure they start their day with protein, not a bowl full of sugar. But birthdays are for breaking a few rules. 😊

So we bought the cereals and family members brought their favorites.

Suddenly, something occurred - we weren’t just eating breakfast.

We were telling stories - laughing - engaging - being a family

“This was my favorite.”
“I remember eating this at Grandma’s house.”
“This one takes me right back to being a kid.”

Watching my children experience a little piece of our childhood reminded me that legacy is made up of so much more than what we own.

It’s the traditions our children carry forward. The stories they remember. The values we teach them. The silly things we did together that someday make them say, “Remember when…?”

That’s one of the reasons I believe so deeply in estate planning.

Yes, an estate plan protects your assets and gives instructions for what happens when you’re gone. But underneath all of those documents is something much more human:

You’re protecting the people who are part of your story.

At Three Oaks Law, we help families plan for the practical things - because having those things handled creates space for what really matters: the people, traditions, memories, and values that make a family your family.

Someday, my kids probably won’t remember every story about how I helped a client or every responsible breakfast I made them eat.

But I have a feeling they might remember the birthday when Mom let them eat all the sugary cereal.

Some things should be planned with an attorney. We've seen DIY plans go sideways and the chaos that happened after could've been avoided. For example, a women added her adult daughter to her bank account to make it easier if she needed help as she aged. Her daughter filed bankruptcy and mom's money was lost in the bankruptcy. Unintended consequences are real. Let us plan for you because we consider the "What ifs" and plan for them.
