In 1959, 8-year-old Ronald McNair walked into the segregated public library in Lake City, South Carolina, and tried to check out books. When the librarian refused because he was Black, he sat down and refused to leave.
Police were called, along with his mother. He was eventually allowed to check out the books, took them, and left. He went on to earn a Ph.D. in Physics from MIT, became a NASA astronaut, and flew on the Space Shuttle Challenger. He died in the 1986 Challenger disaster.
Today, the very library building that once denied him service has been turned into a center honoring Ronald McNair. Today, the very library building that once denied him service is named the Ronald McNair Life History Center in his honor.
