As you can see, if you have do not have a government lender in Florida, you probably still need to pay your rent or mortgage. Check with your bank. Some lenders allow forbearance on loans, but remember interest continues to accrue on the unpaid balance and the payments will typically be added to the end of the loan. Forbearance is not loan forgiveness.

Some local governments have moved to stem evictions and foreclosures for everyone, and a few are even freezing rent and mortgage payments entirely.

According to Carfax, cars can lose more than 10 percent of their value during the first month after you drive off the lot. The amount your car is worth will just keep falling, too. According to current depreciation rates, the value of a new vehicle can drop by more than 20 percent after the first 12 months of ownership.

In the event of an accident and your new or nearly new car is totaled, the insurance company only owes you the ACV (actual cash value) of the vehicle irrespective of the balance left on the financing.

GAP insurance will pay the difference between the actual cash value of a vehicle and the balance still owed on the financing. Buy it and maintain it until you car is worth more than the amount owed.

Everyone you have a duty to mitigate your losses post storm, that is to take reasonable steps to prevent further loss. When you do, however, document everything with photos and video and make a written inventory of EVERYTHING.

If you have a business, you may have business interruption coverage for your economic losses.
Your home owners policy will often pay for relocation expenses.

If you must sue your insurance carrier for coverage of a loss and you win, the insurance company is required by Florida law to pay your attorneys fees.

Don not assign your rights to a contractor!

Happy New Year. Time to review your insurance policies, especially your auto policy. Many of you have "full coverage" and think you are protected, but typically you are not. Many auto insurance agents sell "full coverage" in Florida as PIP and Property Damage, the only coverage required by law in Florida.

The "full coverage" doesn't provide protection for your assets if you injure someone and it is your fault, nor does it cover you if you or a family member are hit and injured by an uninsured or underinsured driver.
