Jacksonville Brotherhood of Police Officers Inc. The Jacksonville Brotherhood of Police Officers is a non profit organization whose goal is to bridge Our membership consist of mostly minorities but not solely.

The JBPO is comprised of sworn law enforcement officers and civilians, male and female. We are open to anyone who shares are values and goals. We provide a great deal of community service by way of monetary donations and in kind services. We also provide three scholarships to deserving students annually. Since 1979 when we were founded we have fought for equality, training, promotional opportuniti

es and growth for minorities in law enforcement. We are proud to say that because of the actions of some members of this organization progress has been made and we will continue to seek fair representation of the community in our law enforcement agencies.

THIS is the side of law enforcement that we do not hear enough about! The voice of Bishop Antonio Richardson on patrol doing the good work should bring joy to our hearts and maybe even a tear to our eyes. We are sure the heavens rejoiced on this particular evening. Hats off to the JSO for highlighting this life saving moment. Both officers did an outstanding job in a tough situation.

Today we mourn the passing ,but celebrate the life and contributions of civil rights icon Reverend Jessie Jackson. He represented the best in human kind. May God grant comfort to his family and dear friends and may his soul rest in the arms of the Lord Jesus Christ. Well done Rev. Jackson.

100 YEARS...Happy BLACK HISTORY MONTH

The origins of the month

Black History Month wasn’t always a monthlong celebration. In February 1926, historian and author Carter G. Woodson created Negro History Week. It was a weeklong celebration in an effort to teach people about African-American history and the contributions of Black people.

This effort was made under the umbrella of an organization he founded in September 1915 called the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, or ASALH.

“I think Black folks understood what they had contributed to America’s historical narrative, but no one was talking about it,” said Kaye Whitehead, the organization’s president. “No one was centralizing it until Dr. Carter G. Woodson was in 1926.”

After he passed away in 1950, the members of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity, which Dr. Woodson was a member of, did a lot of groundwork to encourage celebrating the week. The fraternity was also responsible for the push to extend the celebrations to a full month. Eventually, in 1976, President Gerald Ford became the first president to issue a message recognizing the month.
