JALA wishes to congratulate Alexandra Underkofler, who will receive The Florida Bar President's Pro Bono Service Award for the Fourth Judicial Circuit Jan. 22 at the Florida Supreme Court. Her most impactful pro bono work has been through JALA’s Veterans Legal Collaborative (VLC), a monthly clinic providing veterans with direct access to volunteer attorneys. On Wednesday, October 22, 2025, a jury in St. Johns County returned a verdict in favor of our client, former Fire Chief, Scott Bullard, finding that the County breached a contract by not returning him to the position of Battalion Chief after it decided to remove him as Chief. The jury awarded Mr. Bullard $500,000.

We are thrilled with the jury’s finding and award of back pay, but this is only the first step. We will continue to pursue reinstatement for Mr. Bullard as well as other remedies to make him whole.

We want to thank our client, Mr. Bullard, for the trust he placed in our firm. We are grateful for his family and supporters who stood with him every step of the way.

We also want to thank every member of our firm, Delegal Poindexter & Underkofler, PA for their tireless efforts. A trial victory is confluence of thousands of hours of work by our clerks, legal assistants, paralegals, and attorneys, and we are grateful for everyone’s contributions to this victory.

Finally, we are grateful to the Judge, the courtroom staff, the bailiffs and the opposing counsel. Trial work is never easy, but the professionalism and diligence of everyone involved contributed to a smooth trial.
