𝗜𝗳 𝗬𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝘀𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴'𝘀 𝗪𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴.

“I don't want to bother them.”

“This might be a stupid question.”

“I already asked once.”

“I don't really understand what they told me.”

We never want a client thinking those things.

Tax problems are complicated.

IRS terminology can be confusing.

The process can take time.

And sometimes the same thing needs to be explained more than once before it completely makes sense.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻.

At Practical Tax Solutions®, we believe clients should understand what's happening with their case—not feel embarrassed because they don't.

Ask the question.

Ask us to explain it differently.

Ask why something is necessary.

Ask what happens next.

Ask what we're waiting on.

A good professional shouldn't make you feel foolish for wanting to understand something you're paying them to handle.

And communication shouldn't be treated like an interruption to the work.

𝗜 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗜 𝗢𝘄𝗲 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁...

$20,000.

$50,000.

$100,000.

Maybe more.

That's often where a conversation about a tax problem begins.

And that's perfectly fine.

𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 — 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿.

The number someone remembers may have come from an old notice.

It may represent only one tax year.

Additional penalties and interest may have accrued.

Payments or credits may have posted.

Other periods may be involved.

And sometimes the account history reveals issues that aren't obvious from the balance alone.

That's why at Practical Tax Solutions®, we don't want to build an entire strategy around what somebody 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝘀 the IRS records say.

𝗪𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄.

What years are involved?

What's been assessed?

What's been filed?

What's still missing?

What does the account history actually show?

Once those facts are established, the conversation becomes much more useful.

Because you can't build a precise strategy around an approximate problem.

𝗜'𝗺 𝗔𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝗣𝗮𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻.

We hear that fairly often.

And sometimes that's great.

An IRS installment agreement can absolutely be the appropriate resolution for a taxpayer's situation.

But there's another question worth asking:

𝗪𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆...

𝗢𝗿 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲?

Those aren't necessarily the same thing.

Before deciding whether an existing arrangement makes sense, the bigger picture may need to be understood.

Are all required returns filed?

Is the balance accurate?

What tax years are involved?

Is the payment sustainable?

Have the available resolution options actually been evaluated?

Has anything changed financially since the agreement was established?

A payment plan can be a solution.

But the existence of a payment plan doesn't automatically tell you whether it's the 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 solution for your circumstances.

At Practical Tax Solutions®, that's why we believe in understanding the case before recommending the strategy.

Doing *something* can feel better than doing nothing.

But when you're dealing with a tax problem, movement alone doesn't necessarily mean you're moving in the right direction.

Before asking:

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘄𝗲 𝗱𝗼?

Sometimes the better questions are:

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴?

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗥𝗦 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗲?

The problem may still be there.

The paperwork may still need to be completed.

And there may still be work ahead.

But something changes when you finally understand:

Where you are.

What needs to happen.

What comes first.

And what you're working toward.

The unknown starts becoming known.

The questions start getting answers.

And something that once felt impossible begins to feel manageable.

That's one of the things we've learned after more than 20 years helping people through difficult tax situations.

Peace of mind doesn't always come from having the problem completely solved today.

When you're considering hiring a company to help with an IRS problem, here's a question worth asking:

𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗺𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗥𝗦?

Because the person you initially speak with may not be the person legally authorized to represent your case.

Generally, attorneys, Certified Public Accountants, and Enrolled Agents can have unlimited representation rights before the IRS, subject to applicable rules and authorization.

So ask:

Who is my representative?

What are their credentials?

When does representation actually begin?

Will a Power of Attorney be filed when representation is part of the engagement?

And who will communicate with the IRS regarding my case?

Those are reasonable questions.

And a professional firm should be comfortable answering them.

𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗜𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗔𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘀.

Sometimes people come to a tax professional hoping to hear a particular answer.

That they qualify for a certain program.

That the IRS will accept a tiny settlement.

That a balance can simply disappear.

That nothing needs to be filed.

That the problem can be fixed immediately.

Sometimes the facts support the answer they hoped for.

Sometimes they don't.

And that's where professionalism matters.

At Practical Tax Solutions®, our job isn't to make every answer sound good.

𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘁.

If there's a better option, we'll explain it.

If something needs to happen first, we'll tell you.

If the strategy you hoped for doesn't fit the facts, we'll explain why.

And if we don't know enough yet to responsibly answer the question, we'll tell you that too.

Because telling someone what they want to hear may make for an easier conversation today...

Think about that for a second.

When you speak with a professional about something as serious as a tax problem, the entire conversation shouldn't feel like one long sales pitch.

You should leave knowing more than you did when you arrived.

You should understand your situation better.

You should know what questions still need answers.

You should have a clearer idea of what the next steps might look like.

And sometimes...

You may even learn that you don't need the service you originally thought you did.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗼𝗸𝗮𝘆.

At Practical Tax Solutions®, we believe the first job of a good consultation is to understand the problem—not manufacture a reason to sell a solution.

Will every conversation become a client?

No.

Should every conversation be treated with honesty and respect anyway?

𝗔𝗯𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆.

Because trust isn't something that should begin after a contract is signed.

It should begin with the very first conversation.

𝗔𝘀𝗸 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗜𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀.

Here's a question worth asking before hiring someone to handle an important tax matter:

“What happens if we learn something that changes the plan?”

Because sometimes...

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲.

Or new facts are discovered.

Income changes.

A missing return is identified.

Updated financial information changes eligibility.

An IRS transcript reveals something unexpected.

A collection issue develops.

A strategy that made sense six months ago may not be the strategy that makes sense today.

That's not necessarily a failure of the process.

Sometimes it's proof that the process is working.

A good professional shouldn't force your case to follow an outdated strategy simply because that was the original plan.

They should recognize when the facts have changed...

Explain what those changes mean...

And adjust the strategy when appropriate.

It would be nice if tax resolution worked that way.

It doesn't.

The goal isn't to pick the option that sounds the most attractive.

The goal is to determine which options actually fit the facts of your case.

Your income matters.

Your expenses matter.

Your assets matter.

Your compliance matters.

Your tax history matters.

And even the timing of certain events can matter.

That's why two taxpayers with similar balances can end up with completely different strategies.

At Practical Tax Solutions®, we don't believe in starting with a resolution and trying to make the client fit into it.

𝗪𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁.

Then we determine which strategy fits the facts.
