Sad news travelled slow to me slowly this time. Leflore County Circuit Clerk Elmus Stockstill, age 50, died suddenly on November 29. I found Mr. Stockstill to be quite knowledgeable and hands on when it came to elections in his county.

Leflore County Circuit Clerk Elmus Stockstill has died.

House Bill 1020, committee substitute, amends the existing sales tax law, which presently provides an 18 percent diversion to the COJ of the 7 percent state sales tax collected in the city.
The bill's amendment provides that 18.751% of this 18 percent diversion shall be deposited into the Capitol Complex Improvement District Project Fund created in Section 29-5-215, and the amount that would otherwise have been
allocated and paid to the City of Jackson shall be reduced by such
amount.

Based on past elections, I hope to be hired as a lawyer on election matters.
At this stage of the election season, the matter of candidates satisfying residency and other requirements is front and center.
The Mississippi Election Code allows any person to file a petition contesting the qualifications of a candidate seeking the nomination of a political party. The contest needs to be filed with the party executive committee with whom the candidate in question qualified (the county committee for county offices and the state committee for statewide and district offices). Grounds for disqualification typically include residency and felony conviction. The contest petition needs to be filed within 10 days of the February 1 candidate qualifying deadline
The deadline to contest the qualifications of a candidate running as an independent is 31 days after the August 8th first primary election; the contest petition may be brought by any person, and should be filed with either the county or state election commission depending on the office in question.

Over the years, I have handled numerous age discrimination cases. One went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.
This article discusses the legal hurdles faced by older job applicants seeking relief under the Age Discrimination in Employment Act.

Digital recruiting is leaving more of a forensic trail in discrimination cases. But a wave of litigation is running up against higher legal hurdles.

"Jackson lawyer Sam Begley, who represents the Partners in the lawsuit, said LaRose’s sworn statement is “powerful evidence that Ms. Brune was not acting by mistake or accident when she forged Mr. Allen’s name to 38 Downtown Jackson Partners checks. The Madison County criminal indictment mirrors the allegations of Downtown Jackson Partners in its civil fraud action, as they pertain to those forged checks that she fraudulently deposited into her checking account at her bank’s Ridgeland branch.”

He called the Partners “an outstanding organization, and Mr. Allen and his board have conducted themselves with honesty and integrity.”

Linda Brune denies she embezzled anything from Henry LaRose and the Downtown Jackson Partners.

I have had the honor of representing numerous educators in employment matters.
"After months of fighting to get her $120,000 a year job back, Xandra Brooks-Keys, former superintendent of the Coahoma County School District, will get a hearing and an opportunity to tell her side. The Coahoma County Chancery Court has ordered the district to schedule a termination hearing for Brooks-Keys and litigation stayed pending the completion of the hearing. The Board of Trustees of the Coahoma County School District fired Brooks-Keys at a special called meeting on March 27. Prior to her termination she was placed on a five day suspension, which was later withdrawn.
Once she was terminated, Brooks-Keys retained Samuel Begley of Begley Law Firm, PLLC., based in Jackson, as her counsel. The firm filed a complaint arguing that Brooks-Keys’ contract afforded her a property interest protected by the due process clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Xandra Brooks-Keys, former superintendent of the Coahoma County School District, was fired in March and is fighting to get her job back.
