In the middle of this crisis, we are reminded that our hope is not in material things but in eternal salvation through the risen saviour. We encourage you to find an Easter service online Sunday, and spend time in worship and gratitude. Links to churches attended by the Teel & Maroney family are in an earlier post. And remember that the sacrifices we are making now pale in comparison to the ultimate sacrifice made over 2000 years ago.

SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS: The CARES Act signed by President Trump last week has provisions in it designed to help small businesses stay in business. Some of the loans through the SBA can be forgiven, meaning you could get a SBA loan and not have to pay it back. Also, the CARES Act modified the recently enact Small Business Reorganization Act. This will help small businesses that may need to restructure its debts in a Chapter 11 bankruptcy. If you have questions about how the CARES Act might impact your business, please call Jerome Teel in our office. He can help you find a lender to provide access to the SBA money that might keep you in business, and answer your other questions.

Many of our clients are interested in their credit scores and how to improve them. It may be more difficult in 2020. Fair Isaac Corporation (FICO) is adjusting its formula based on current market conditions and the result may be lower credit scores for millions of people. There are many news stories you can read online about this change. We've posted one news story below. Some highlights: make your payments on time every month; pay off your credit card/revolving debt every month; and avoid consumer or personal loans.

The upcoming launch of FICO's latest credit score will start incorporating consumers' debt levels into their scoring model.

When the bankruptcy laws were revised in 2005, Congress excluded social security income from the formula to determine if someone qualifies for a chapter 7 bankruptcy. But Congress did not exclude VA benefits. There is now a push by Senators Baldwin and Cornyn to also exclude VA benefits from this formula. We applaud and support this effort. Please contact your congressman and senators and encourage them to support this measure. A link to a news article discussing this proposed amendment is below.https://rebootcamp.militarytimes.com/news/transition/2019/03/07/bankrupt-vets-can-lose-their-disability-benefits-this-new-effort-would-protect-them/

The HAVEN Act is trying to create immunity in bankruptcy cases for benefits provided by the VA and Department of Defense for disabled veterans or their surviving spouses.

One of the most frequent questions we are asked when consulting with a client about filing for chapter 7 bankruptcy is: How long will I have to wait before I can qualify for a mortgage to purchase a house? Below is an article that contains great information about waiting periods for mortgages following chapter 7 discharge. Our experience with mortgages has been similar to what is reported in this article. However, there are some "non-conforming" lenders that may be able to provide mortgage financing sooner than reported below. Our best advice is to be diligent to improve your credit score following chapter 7 discharge and to personally visit with a local mortgage broker to obtain the latest mortgage requirements. If we can help answer any questions, please don't hesitate to call. Here's the link: https://themortgagereports.com/20664/bankruptcy-foreclosure-waiting-period-mortgage-after-bankruptcy

Getting approved for a new mortgage after bankruptcy can happen in as little as one year.

Waiting to file bankruptcy may be more damaging than filing now. Filing for chapter 7 bankruptcy will eliminate debt and allow you to begin to rebuild your credit score quicker. It will also remove the burden of financial stress and make the collection phone calls stop. Below is an article that discusses the financial problems caused by delaying the decision to file.
