If you are the parent or guardian of a college student, having them sign powers of attorney can allow you to access important information and make decisions on their behalf.

Once your child is old enough to be considered to be a legal "adult," you no longer have the same powers as you did when they were a minor. Yesterday we got to meet with Anna and her mom to sign a power of attorney. Anna is a college student at UT Martin, and was selected as a winner of our recent POA giveaway. We highly enjoyed meeting with them!! 😊

Having your college student execute a power of attorney is crucial for ensuring their financial and medical well-being while they're away at school. It allows you to make important medical and financial decisions on their behalf in case of emergencies or if they are unable to do so themselves.

Since your child is considered a legal adult, most financial and medical institutions will no longer allow you to access important information without proper authorization. A power of attorney can allow you to access their information seamlessly, without having to jump through hoops to help your child.

Congratulations to SBC Partner Sara E. Barnett, Attorney at Law for being selected as one of the City of Jackson’s 2024 Influential Women! Sara practices in the areas of Estate Planning, Elder Law, and Trusts as well as family law.

Sara’s leadership goes well beyond the practice of law as she has made an impact on our community. Sara currently serves on the board of directors for the Boys and Girls Club of Jackson and is a Commissioner on the Tennessee Supreme Court’s Access to Justice Committee. Sara is the President Elect of the Howell Edmund Jackson Inn of Court.

Sara is also an avid Tennis player and serves on USTA Tennessee Board as well as national and Southern committees. She is also on the board of Jackson West-TN Tennis Association.

To conclude our Friday Spotlight series, I would like to introduce to you the man known to most as "Charlie", though I know him as my dad.

When he is not in the office, or in a courtroom, Charlie spends his time sailing, watching sports, and spending time with family. He is a passionate fan of all Memphis Tigers sports, and watches every game he gets the chance to. Charlie was ranked second in his graduating class at the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law. ⚖📚

From his knowledge of the law to his advanced legal strategies, he has truly made an impact on many lives and has been a mentor to dozens of legal professionals in our area. I cannot express how proud I am to call him, not only my mentor, but also my dad.

This is one of the most important conversations you can have with your family. Here are five things to consider:

1. Who would you appoint to make decisions regarding your healthcare and finances if you become unable to do so for yourself? If you don't properly appoint someone to care for you, a court could appoint someone for you.

2. The average cost of a nursing home in Tennessee is around $7,500/month. Do you have a plan in place to pay for such care in case you need it in the future?

3. If you already have an estate plan, has your family experienced any changes that would require a revision? (i.e. divorce or death of family member)
