It's tempting to treat a misdemeanor as something that will sort itself out. However, usually it doesn't.

Smaller charges still show up on background checks and job applications, and depending on what it is, they can affect your license and your ability to get to work. That's a long shadow for something that felt minor at the time.

A lot of people put off filing for bankruptcy far longer than they need to, usually because of things they've heard that aren't true.

You won't lose everything, since exemptions in most consumer cases protect your home, your vehicle, and the things you need to keep working. Nobody in your life is going to find out either, because while filings are technically public record, no announcement goes out and no one gets notified.

And credit isn't gone forever. It affects your report for a while, though plenty of people rebuild faster than they expected once the debt itself is behind them.

Choosing a lawyer is mostly a question of who you'd want in your corner.

We've been licensed in Tennessee since 1985 and running this practice since 1994. Forty years in West Tennessee courtrooms, in front of judges we know well and across from attorneys we've faced many times before. That familiarity is worth more than it sounds.

If an insurance adjuster has already called, you're not obligated to give them anything today.

They're usually friendly, and they sound helpful, and it's easy to say more than you meant to. A recorded statement, a casual "I'm fine" before you've seen a doctor, or a yes to that first settlement offer can all quietly cost you later. Soft tissue injuries take days to show up, and the early number is calculated while your claim still looks small.

None of that means they're doing anything wrong. It just means they work for the company paying the bill, and you should have someone in your corner too.

Nobody plans for a car accident, and in the moment it's hard to think clearly. Worth knowing these ahead of time.

▪️Get checked out medically, even if you feel fine
▪️Take photos of the vehicles, the road, and anything that shows what happened
▪️Collect names, numbers, and insurance details from everyone involved
▪️Make sure a police report gets filed
▪️Try not to admit fault at the scene, even just to be polite

That last one catches good people all the time. Fault is rarely as simple as it feels from inside the car, and what gets said in the first few minutes has a way of coming back later.
