"What's going on? As lumber prices reached record levels this spring, many DIYers and builders simply stopped buying. At the same time, sawmills were upping production in order to cash in on the record prices. That, of course, was a prefect recipe for a correction. But now with prices still freefalling, buyers have little reason to jump back in. Thus that's why we've shifted all the way from a wood shortage to an oversupply."

For the 13th consecutive week, the price of framing lumber is down. Lumber is 33% cheaper now than during the summer of 2018.

“With inflation a simmering concern, when mortgage rates do begin to move, they will most likely move higher,” said Danielle Hale, chief economist at Realtor.com. “For homebuyers and refinancers alike, mortgage rates remain favorable, but may not remain so for long.”

Interest rates have barely budged in recent weeks, extending the opportunity for home buyers to lock in cheap financing.
