A new proposal gaining attention could change the way homeowners think about moving.

The idea behind a portable mortgage is simple: instead of giving up your current mortgage when you sell, you could potentially transfer that mortgage to your next home allowing you to keep the benefit of a favorable interest rate.

This is especially interesting for homeowners who locked in a much lower rate a few years ago and have been hesitant to move because they don’t want to trade that rate for today’s higher rates.

👉 But there’s an important catch: portable mortgages are not currently available as a standard U.S. mortgage product. Federal policymakers are studying the concept, and legislation introduced in Congress would require a study of the feasibility and potential impacts of portable federally backed mortgages. (GovInfo⁠)
