We get calls frequently asking if a certain task or procedure is within a LVN, RN or APRN’s scope of practice.

The Nursing Practice Act (NPA)(https://www.bon.texas.gov/pdfs/law_rules_pdfs/nursing_practice_act_pdfs/NPA2023.pdf) and Board Rules and Regulations (https://www.bon.texas.gov/laws_and_rules_rules_and_regulations_current.asp.html) are written broadly so all nurses can apply them in various practice settings across the State. Because each nurse has a different background, knowledge, and level of competence, the Board does not have an all-purpose list of tasks that every nurse can or cannot perform, but we do have decision making models (DMMs) to help nurses determine if a particular task is within their scope!

For RNs and LVNs: Scope of Practice Decision-Making Model (DMM)(https://www.bon.texas.gov/pdfs/publication_pdfs/Scope%20of%20Practice%20Decision-Making%20Model%20-%20DMM.pdf)

Reminder:
As of September 1, 2023, nurses will only receive license expiration reminder notifications by email for nurses enrolled in the NCSBN Nursys e-Notify system. The Texas Board of Nursing is no longer mailing yellow postcards to licensees notifying nurses that they are eligible to renew (August 31, 2023).

To make sure you receive expiration reminders by email from Nursys e-Notify, register for a free Nurse account from Nursys.com (https://www.nursys.com/EN/ENDefault.aspx). If you already have a Nurse account with Nursys e-Notify, you do not need to re-register. If not, please create an account before August 31, 2023. There is no cost to create an “As a Nurse” account on Nursys e-Notify.

Keeping Current:
As part of the Standards of Nursing Practice that apply to all nurses, 217.11(1)(A) states that all nurses shall “Know and conform to the Texas Nursing Practice Act and the board's rules and regulations as well as all federal, state, or local laws, rules or regulations affecting the nurse's current area of nursing practice.” On January 9th, revisions to 22 T.A.C., Part 9, Texas Medical Board went into effect.

The rule change that will likely impact the greatest number of nurses relates to physician delegation. The numbering for the TMB’s Delegation rule has changed from Chapter 193 to Chapter 169 (https://texas-sos.appianportalsgov.com/rules-and-meetings?chapter=169&interface=VIEW_TAC&part=9&title=22). Board Staff encourages nurses to review these changes to make sure you are current with the rules and regulations for that could affect your area of practice.

Can you say FAILURE!! We obviously failed our elderly and disabled. Just remember that by the grace of God any one of us may end up having to live in one of these places.....yeah, think about that for a few minutes. FAILURE!!! NOT ACCEPTABLE ON ANY LEVEL!!

The first major federal effort to measure the deadly impact of the new coronavirus in nursing homes found around 26,000 deaths, a total that likely falls short of the full toll.

AUSTIN - Governor Greg Abbott today announced that Care.com is increasing in-home child care access for frontline workers responding to the COVID-19 emergency. As part of this initiative, Care.com is offering 90 days of free, premium access to their services, along with specific portals for frontline workers and caregivers in Texas.

Frontline workers looking for child care as well as prospective caregivers can both enroll at
https://texasfrontline.care.com/. Potential caregivers are subject to Care.com’s extensive background and safety checks. While child care services are not typically free of charge, the Texas portal gives residents the ability to waive their fees and volunteer as caregivers, providing additional support to frontline workers.

"This Care.com initiative will provide an additional avenue of support for our frontline workers throughout the COVID-19 response," said Governor Abbott. "I am grateful for Care.com's commitment to ensuring accessible child care is available to Texans fulfilling essential services during this time."

"Care.com is honored to partner with Governor Abbott and the state to make this offer and access available to the frontline workers and caregivers across Texas. We are all dependent on the commitment of these essential workers as they look after our families and they deserve nothing less from each of us," said Tim Allen, CEO of Care.com.
