Engaging More Women in Academic Innovation: Findings and Recommendations

In our upcoming issue of T&I, Jane Muir et al. analyze their findings from a survey conducted among academic women involved in innovation, invention, and/or entrepreneurship in an effort to understand factors that encouraged and discouraged academic women’s participation in technology commercialization. They also put forth recommendations based on survey feedback to address these issues and engage more academic women in all stages of the innovation lifecycle.

The United Inventors Association (UIA) is proud to include Dan Klitsner as a winner of our Inspire Top 100 list of 2022. Inspire Top 100 is a list of exemplary individuals who inspire, contribute, and/or advocate for the inventor community.

Dan Klitsner is an Industrial Designer specializing in concept ideation and toy invention. Before toys he was known for creating many iconic bottles such as Woodford Reserve, Hornitos Tequila, and the Clorox Toilet Cleaner bottle. In 1990 he founded Klitsner industrial design, LLC, (known as KID ) to focus primarily on toy invention and has licensed over 300 products, most notably the mega-hit Bop It as well as 4 other #1 games, including Simon Swipe, Simon Air, the Perplexus line of 3-D mazes and most recently Pop It Pro for Buffalo Games. He has received 2 gold IDEA awards and 4 TOTY awards, Recently Dan and his wife Alicia founded Bop It For Good to create the Bop it Button to benefit Lighthouse For The Blind.

The United Inventors Association (UIA) is proud to include Jin Chen as a winner of our Inspire Top 100 list of 2022. Inspire Top 100 is a list of exemplary individuals who inspire, contribute, and/or advocate for the inventor community.

Born and raised in China, Jin moved to Alaska after her sophomore year at China University of Petroleum. After receiving her bachelor’s degree in accounting and her MBA from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Jin pursued a public accounting career for three years before joining Alaska Skylar Travel in the spring of 2015 to develop then the first, now the largest Chinese-focused tour operation in Alaska. She took the company's revenue to grow five-fold, and staff has expanded from 10 to 50 employees.

Jin designed a multifunction travel blanket – The Planeket. The assemble warehouse is in Anchorage, and trademarked with the US Patent and Trademark Office. It is a product featured on Conde Nast Travel and Bloomberg Business.

Jin founded Brilliant Connection Consulting in 2020. It is the first of its kind offering trade consulting between China and U.S, in Alaska. Brill-Con has extensive experiences in helping businesses getting products and services into the Chinese market, finding direct suppliers for Alaska businesses to cut down operation cost. Brill-Con also provides full service in business purchase and sell process.

Jin serves on the board of directors of Visit Anchorage and Anchorage Chamber of Commerce, on the Alaska Tourism Industry Association marketing committee, and as Commissioner for Anchorage’s Sister City partnership with Harbin, China.

Gary Pyper is a Toy Inventor and industrial design specialist with extensive experience in bringing ideas to market. As Founder of Fun-damental invention, Gary is responsible for licensing over 100 mass market products into the toy, game & infant industries. In 2022 Fun-damental was awarded the prestigious “Play Creators’ "Design Studio” of the year” award for its contribution to toy invention.

When not inventing, Gary holds the post of “inventor in Residence" at Kingston University, Where he has helped shape the UK’s first Toy invention Program in collaboration with Spinmaster Toys. Gary Works with both the UK Design Council & numerous International Universities, Mentoring new inventors by helping them develop their ideas for mass market. Gary is passionate about empowering start-up businesses and individuals to capitalise on their own creativity, He is also a published Children's Book author and holds a Masters degree, with high distinction in "Applied imagination" from Central St Martins, London.
