On Harvey Milk Day, we join with others throughout California and across the country to honor the legacy of Harvey Milk — a pioneering public servant whose advocacy for visibility, equality, and representation helped reshape the national conversation around LGBTQ+ rights.

Milk understood that progress depends on people being able to bring their full identities into public life, workplaces, and communities. That principle continues to resonate across industries today, including STEM fields and intellectual property, where diverse perspectives strengthen creativity, problem-solving, and advancement.

As we reflect on his enduring impact, we also recognize the importance of fostering environments where innovators, creators, and entrepreneurs from all backgrounds have the opportunity to contribute and lead. Recent research reinforces this connection, linking LGBTQ-inclusive workplace policies to stronger innovation outcomes, including increased patent activity and higher-quality patents: https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/1087777
