Last day! If you filed an extension, your 2025 return is due today.

Today’s the day, and there’s no second extension. If you haven’t filed yet, here’s what to keep in mind:

✅ File today, even if you can’t pay everything you owe
✅ Filing on time helps you avoid the late-filing penalty (5% per month, up to 25%)
✅ You can work on the balance after you file, and you don’t have to figure it out alone

If you filed an extension in April, tomorrow is your final day to file. There’s no second extension.

👇 What to know before tomorrow:

✅ File on time, even if you can’t pay in full
✅ Missing the deadline adds a late-filing penalty of 5% of your unpaid tax per month, up to 25%
✅ An extension gave you more time to file, not more time to pay, so interest has been adding up since April

If you owe more than you can pay right now, filing first keeps the bigger penalty off the table. From there, there are ways to handle the balance, from setting up a payment plan to stopping wage garnishment.

The Treasury Department and IRS have proposed new regulations that could change who qualifies for refundable tax credits, a shift that may directly affect families filing with an ITIN or in mixed-status households.

Under REG-119882-25, the rules could impact eligibility for the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, American Opportunity Tax Credit, and the adoption credit. These are refundable credits, meaning they can increase a refund or reduce what is owed, so changes to eligibility criteria could affect refund amounts for households with at least one ITIN filer or mixed immigration status.

It is not yet clear when the proposed rules would take effect or whether a comment period will lead to revisions. Filers in mixed-status households should watch for official guidance before assuming how a future return may be affected.

Filed an extension? Your deadline is THIS THURSDAY, October 15.

An extension moves your filing deadline from April 15 to October 15, and that’s it. There’s no second extension. 👇

❌ Myth: You can extend your extension
✅ Fact: One extension. October 15 is final.
✅ Know your deadline so it doesn’t sneak up on you
✅ Start gathering your documents now so you’re not scrambling at the last second

Bradley from our team explains one of the biggest misconceptions people have about extensions, and why waiting until the last minute can cost you.

The IRS has revised its guidance on the qualified overtime compensation deduction again, a sign that even the agency recognizes how confusing this benefit has become for hourly workers trying to claim it correctly.

Fact Sheet FS-2026-13, released in August 2026, updates the FAQ covering how overtime pay is calculated, documented and reported for the deduction. The update is aimed at workers who log overtime hours and want to avoid errors that could delay a refund or trigger a notice later.

What remains unclear is how these changes interact with earlier guidance from previous fact sheets, so workers who already filed under older rules should watch for any follow-up clarification from the IRS.

The IRS has confirmed there is no such thing as a "Tribal Tax Credit," despite what some promoters are claiming to taxpayers across the country. If you were told you could claim this credit, you may have been misled, and that could put your return under scrutiny.

According to IR-2026-112, the IRS says this fabricated credit has been pushed by promoters looking to profit off unsuspecting filers. Anyone who already claimed it on a federal return could face delayed refunds, IRS notices, or a bill for back taxes, interest and penalties.

If you believe you may have filed a return claiming this credit, it is worth reviewing your documents now. Depending on your situation, you may be able to correct the return before the IRS flags it, which could help limit penalties down the line.

Why should you file a tax extension? Because April 15 isn’t always realistic.

An extension request to the IRS gives you about six more months to file, from April 15 to October 15. 👇

✅ Time to gather the documents you actually need
✅ Helps you avoid late-filing penalties
✅ Best for people who know they can file, but don’t have everything ready yet

Think of it like asking your teacher for more time on your homework. Bradley from our team explains why it’s a smart move for a lot of people.
