Pride Month is here, and we will be showing up with communities across the state.

This month is a celebration, but it’s also a reminder that LGBTQ+ Hoosiers are still facing attacks on their rights, safety, and dignity. Pride has always been rooted in protest, community, and the fight to live openly and freely.

As Pride events happen across the state, we’re proud to stand with LGBTQ+ Hoosiers and everyone working toward a future where all of us can be safe, seen, and free.

Find a Pride event near you and sign up to volunteer with us: https://www.aclu-in.org/2026-indiana-pride-hub/

🎥 Wednesday night, our Advocacy Specialist Camelia Manring joined Women4Change, Planned Parenthood, Hoosier Jews for Choice, Good Trouble Coalition, Indiana Task Force, Common Cause Indiana, Path4You, and community members for a showing of The Devil is Busy at Kan-Kan Cinema.

The film follows an Atlanta abortion clinic working to protect patients and staff amid constant protest and intimidation, a reality that reflects the ongoing fight for reproductive access across the country and here in Indiana.

Thank you to everyone who came out for this important conversation and for continuing to show up for reproductive freedom.

Yesterday, our Legal Director Ken Falk was honored with the IBJ's Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Leadership in Law ceremony.

Ken has spent decades defending civil rights and civil liberties in Indiana, and his impact on this work is hard to overstate. Since joining the ACLU of Indiana in 1996, he has approached the law as a way to help people, safeguard their rights, and do what he once described as trying to “repair the world to the best of our ability.”

We’re grateful for Ken’s decades of service, his perspective, and his commitment to this work.

Congratulations, Ken!

“Regardless of opinion, we all have freedom of expression. I hope my colleagues and neighbors across the country will continue to advocate for their rights and the rights of others.” — Suzanne Swierc

For Suzanne, this settlement closes a chapter, but it does not undo the harm.

She challenged her firing because what happened was wrong, and because public employees across the country deserve to know that their rights matter, too. We hope this case serves as a reminder that freedom of expression is always worth defending.

The First Amendment protects public employees from government retaliation when they speak as private citizens.

The ACLU of Indiana has reached a $225,000 settlement in our lawsuit on behalf of Suzanne Swierc, a former Ball State employee who was fired after a private Facebook post about the death of Charlie Kirk was screenshotted and circulated publicly.

Public universities are bound by the Constitution. They cannot punish employees for protected speech because of public pressure or political backlash. The Supreme Court's decision in Louisiana v. Callais puts voting districts that give voters of color an opportunity to elect candidates of our choice in jeopardy across the country.

Although the court has upended decades of progress, we're not giving up or backing down from defending our democracy.
