It's something I hear from families all the time after they've lost someone they love.

They've already planned the funeral.

Everyone agrees on who should inherit what.

They've even started gathering the paperwork.

Then they discover they're still waiting months later.

The truth is, probate isn't usually delayed because someone made a mistake.

It's delayed because the court has a legal process that must be followed. Creditors have time to make claims. Financial institutions have their own requirements. Documents must be filed, reviewed, and approved before assets can be distributed.

For families who are already grieving, those delays can feel overwhelming.

One of the saddest conversations I have with families doesn't happen after someone passes away.

It happens when someone is still alive, but can no longer speak for themselves.

Their family is standing in a hospital, trying to make impossible decisions while asking each other:

"What would Mom have wanted?"

"Would Dad want to stay on life support?"

"I don't know. We never talked about it."

A living will isn't about giving up.

It's about making sure your voice is still part of the conversation, even if you can't speak for yourself.

Too many people think a living will is only for someone who is seriously ill or at the end of life. That's simply not true.

Every adult should have one because accidents, illnesses, and medical emergencies rarely happen when we're expecting them.

When your wishes are written down, your family doesn't have to carry the burden of guessing. They can focus on being together instead of wondering if they're making the right decision.

That's one of the greatest gifts you can leave the people you love.
