May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. The first Japanese immigrants arrived in the United States on May 7, 1843. The transcontinental railroad, whose tracks were laid largely by Chinese immigrant workers, was completed on May 10, 1869. In celebration of this heritage month and the many ways in which Asians and Pacific Islanders have contributed to the fabric of this country, the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Indiana (APABA-IN), together with the Indiana State Bar Association, the Indianapolis Bar Association, the Marion County Bar Association, and the Seventh Circuit Bar Association Committee on Diversity and Inclusion, are pleased to present a program featuring:
DR. KAREN KOREMATSU
Founder and Executive Director of the Fred T. Korematsu Institute
Daughter of the late civil rights icon, Fred Korematsu
Dr. Korematsu will join us for a showing of the award-winning short documentary film And Then They Came for Us, which retells the story of the more than 120,000 Japanese Americans who were forced into the government’s incarceration camps during World War II. And Then They Came for Us features actor and activist George Takei, a Japanese American who was incarcerated at one of these camps. Fred Korematsu, Dr. Korematsu’s father, was an American citizen who was arrested and convicted for refusing to go to the incarceration camps. The U.S. Supreme Court affirmed his conviction in the controversial decision of Korematsu v. U.S., 323 U.S. 214 (1944). In addition to depicting this dark moment in American history, the documentary follows Japanese American activists as they speak out against the government’s more recent Muslim registry and travel ban. Following the film, Dr. Korematsu will discuss continuing challenges that vulnerable populations face with respect to their civil liberties. A panel of diverse speakers will also share their families’ pathways to the United States, obstacles overcome in reaching their destination, and personal inclusive achievements.
Additional panelists include: Judge Rehana Adat-Lopez, Annie Chey-Sluss, Senior Judge G. Michael Witte
*This event will be in-person only. Registration is free. CLE accreditation pending approval.
