September 17 is "Constitution Day," recognizing the day the Constitution was ratified by the states. It is a good time to look back at this incredible document, including the Bill of RIghts, the first 10 amendments to the Constitution. It is from this document that we signify our belief in the common good and it is an agreement that we will strive to seek a more perfect union. The Constitution plainly states that our country shall not adopt a single religion. However, the principles of the Constitution and, particularly, the Bill of Rights draws upon Christian values of caring for our neighbors and lifting up the least of us. On this day, let us resolve to embrace those values and resolve to make them meaningful today and in the future.

Happy May Day! As a child, we would put flowers on our grandfather's porch, knock and run. Now, as an attorney, we celebrate Law Day on May 1st. The Reno County Bar Association had many events planned for Law Day, including an expungement clinic and speakers at the local high schools. All of that had to be cancelled due to the pandemic. However, we can still be mindful of the structure the law gives to the community. We have common ideas of right and wrong and those are (mostly!) included in our Constitutions, statutes, and common law. Here's to Law Day or May Day, whichever you prefer!!!

While life is uncertain right now, please take the time to put together your important information for your friends and relatives in case of emergency. If you have a will, powers of attorney, or other directives, make sure they are easily accessible, with current addresses and phone numbers. Make sure you have a list of medications and, if you have children, the medications, immunizations, and previous illnesses of your children. Put copies of deeds and titles in an easily accessible location. Make sure someone knows where your keys are. Please take the time to consider care for pets if you are away from them for a period of time.

We have now received orders that all courts are closed except for emergency situations. This means that most domestic matters, except filed Petitions for Protection from Abuse or Petitions for Protection from Stalking, are not being scheduled for hearing. We commit to our clients that we will attempt to work out situations with opposing counsel if at all possible. We can file motions, but there will be no hearing, thus no orders, until the courts are open again. If an order is issued that we must remain in our homes, our office will have limited ability to contact other counsel. Our email will continue to be monitored. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Here is the latest update from the Kansas Supreme Court.

Notice to Kansas Active Attorneys

March 16, 2020
Attorneys and their clients who have symptoms of COVID-19, have been exposed to the virus, or are covered by the Kansas Department of Health's recommendations for quarantine and isolation of travelers are advised to follow protocols established by the Kansas judicial branch.

Persons entering any Kansas courthouse may be asked screening questions consistent with public health guidelines. Admission may be denied for public health concerns. These individuals will be encouraged to visit a courtroom or court offices at another time or use a different method of conducting business.

Attorneys should ask their clients to follow these rules. If a judge determines a proceeding must proceed, individuals may be required to wear masks.

Postings inside courthouses will provide telephone or email contact information for court personnel. Contact information for district courts also is available online.

Attorneys, members of the public, and law enforcement officers appearing in courtrooms should follow the same hand foam and handwashing procedures as court employees. That includes frequently washing hands with soap and water for a minimum of 20 seconds or using alcohol-based hand cleaners. If sheriff's deputies or inmates in their custody have a fever or are coughing, they should wear masks while in the courthouses.

If any inmate is confirmed to have COVID-19, the court will coordinate with the sheriff, defense counsel, and the prosecutor to arrange for video appearances or continuances of court proceedings.

We are in challenging times. Trummel Law is striving to help you navigate the intersection of the courts and your families. At the current time, we anticipate our office will remain open. However, we understand that many of our clients and their extended families are dealing with compromised health issues, so if you need a telephone consultation rather than an in-person consultation, we can accommodate that. However, some things may need to be done in person, such as notarizing legal documents, etc. We are working to make sure our office environment promotes health and safety for our clients and our staff. If you have particular health concerns of which we are not already aware, please let us know so we can try to work around those.

The Reno County District Court has announced that, for the time being, hearings on cases already filed may be moved to a different date by the judge, on a case-by-case basis.

If you have questions or concerns, please call!

"True, we [lawyers] build no bridges. We raise no towers. We construct no engines. We paint no pictures -- unless as amateurs for our own principal amusement. There is little of all that we do which the eye of man can see. But we smooth out difficulties; we relieve stress; we correct mistakes; we take up other men's burdens and by our efforts we make possible the peaceful life of men in a peaceful state."

We are receiving calls from individuals with questions about citizenship and immigration. Although I completely sympathize with these folks, I do not have the expertise to advise. So, if you or any friends and family have immigration questions, I would suggest you contact Angela Balderas or Jennifer Hill at the McDonald Tinker firm in Wichita at 316-263-5851.

This is why our firm does what we do!
