Quick question: when's the last time you looked behind your dryer?
Failure to clean is the single biggest cause of home dryer fires — the U.S. Fire Administration found it's behind roughly a third of them. It's not usually the lint trap people forget. It's the vent line running behind the machine and out through the wall, where lint quietly builds up until airflow is blocked and heat has nowhere to go.
Three habits that lower the risk:
1. Clean the lint trap before every single load — don't skip it "just this once."
2. Have the full vent line cleaned out at least once a year, more often if you run loads daily or have a long or bent vent run.
3. Check the outside vent cover while the dryer is running to make sure air is actually flowing out.
