A recent federal court decision, Kwong v. United States, could allow some taxpayers to claim refunds of certain IRS penalties and interest assessed during the COVID-19 disaster period.

While the IRS is appealing the decision, taxpayers may need to file a protective refund claim by July 10, 2026, to preserve their rights if the ruling is ultimately upheld.

You may be affected if you paid:

✔️ Failure-to-pay penalties
✔️ Estimated tax penalties
✔️ IRS interest during the COVID relief period
