A scam is being perpetrated where a sophisticated group of bad actors has set up a fraudulent payment site for various insurers using DOXO, a legitimate payment platform. These fraudsters send legitimate-looking invoices that appear to come from your insurer, directing payment, away from the insurer.

This is affecting national insurers like Allstate, Foremost, USAA, Travelers, Cincinnati, Kemper, Hartford, United Heritage, and many other companies, but it is spreading across the industry.

Be aware of emails soliciting your insurance payment to the DOXO platform.

SCAM ALERT!! We always hear that everyone should be careful of scammers. We think that we could not possibly fall victim to this type of activity. Unfortunately, some people fall prey to them and lose lots of money before they realize it. I worked with someone recently that was a victim of a rental scam and did not realize it until our meeting. It made me angry how the scammer preyed on this person. The scammer used information from public records and listed a house for rent that they did not own. The only contact with the scammer was by email. Security deposits were sent via a money app. A lease was generated electronically. When I reviewed the documents, everything looked "fairly" legit and an unsuspecting person would fall for it. I urge you to be diligent in protecting yourself and others. Your older family members may not be tech savvy and fall for this type of scam. If you do fall victim, call the police immediately, contact the publication where you found the ad and report it, file a report with the money app, and file a claim with the FTC. Stay vigilant!!

I am often asked about divorce issues when there are children involved. Keep in mind that the parents are the ones divorcing. The child is not divorcing his or her parents. It is important to co-parent in a positive way. Hopefully this article helps address some of the issues with co-parenting.

I hope everyone has a safe Memorial Day weekend. Alabama’s amended state health order takes effect today at 5:00 pm. This order will allow for the reopening of entertainment venues, athletic practices, schools and daycare centers, with some restrictions. This order is scheduled to last until July 3.

You would be surprised at the number of people who do not have a valid Will in place. Are you one of them? Having a Will in place is one of the most basic and most important things anyone can do to help their family. I have a few appointments that are still open for next week if anyone would like to book their estate planning session. During the planning session, we will discuss what is most important to you and how you can best protect your family in the event of your incapacity or untimely death. I offer in person as well as virtual appointments. The in person session will last about an hour but no more than an hour and a half.
