Does your child’s school evaluation feel incomplete, rushed, or biased? You may have the right to request an Independent Educational Evaluation, or IEE, at public expense.
An IEE is an evaluation conducted by a qualified professional who is not employed by your child’s school district. Under IDEA, parents can request an IEE when they disagree with the district’s evaluation. The district must follow specific legal procedures, so putting your request in writing and documenting your concerns matters.
Your documentation is one of the most powerful tools you have to protect your child’s right to FAPE, or a Free Appropriate Public Education. Keep records of:
• Your child’s educational, medical, and behavioral needs
• Emails and communication with the school
• Missed services or accommodations
• Changes in grades, behavior, attendance, or progress
• The ways the district’s evaluation does not reflect your child’s actual needs
You know your child best. Your observations, organized carefully, can help tell the full story when a school evaluation does not.
