As people get older, it is common to think about what might happen if managing financial or legal decisions became more difficult.

If those concerns are starting to arise, timing matters.

Estate planning tools such as Financial Powers of Attorney and Advance Directives are most effective when they are put in place while someone can still clearly express their wishes. Waiting too long can limit available options and may require court involvement to manage a person’s affairs.

Planning ahead helps ensure that your wishes are fulfilled and that trusted individuals can step in if needed without unnecessary complications.

If this is something you or your family have started to think about, the Sessa & Dorsey team is here to help. Give us a call at (443) 589-5600 or visit https://www.sessadorsey.com/contact/.

We are so proud to congratulate Cheri Dorsey on her induction into the Baltimore Community Foundation's Professional Advisor Recognition Society (PARS)!

PARS honors the financial and legal professionals who prioritize philanthropy in their service to clients, and Cheri was celebrated at the society's Happy Hour & Investment Update at Barrett's Grill Restaurant in Hunt Valley. Sessa & Dorsey is proud to have not one but two members of our team recognized by this outstanding organization, with Tina Lignos having been inducted years prior.

Cheri, this is a well-deserved honor. Congratulations!

Maryland estate and trust law is changing, and some of these updates may have a direct impact on your estate plan:

Effective October 1, 2026:
βœ… TOD (transfer-on-death) designations now permitted on jointly owned vehicles and marine vessels
βœ… Notarized bill of sale no longer required for certain used vehicle transfers to the MVA

Pending the Governor's signature by June 2:
πŸ“ Transfer-on-Death Deeds for real property, allowing owners to pass real estate to beneficiaries at death without probate
πŸ“ Updates to fiduciary attorney-client privilege, non-resident personal representative appointments, and the 120-hour survival rule under the Simultaneous Death Act

If you are unsure how these changes may affect your estate plan, now is a good time to review. Give us a call or schedule a consultation.

At Sessa & Dorsey, the most common reason we recommend updating an estate plan is for a change in circumstances. But what qualifies?

A change in circumstance can mean a singular significant event, like a marriage, divorce, or the birth of a new grandchild. It can also mean looking ahead and planning for more gradual shifts: the growth or potential sale of a business, a shift in asset values, a beneficiary developing special needs, or new tax legislation which may affect your current strategy.

The reason these moments matter is that your estate plan is built around a specific set of facts and understandings. When these change, even incrementally, elements of your plan may fall out of alignment with your goals or your plan may fail to take advantage of new opportunities.

This is why a coordinated advisory team makes a meaningful difference. When your estate planning attorney, financial advisor, CPA, and other advisors and professionals are in regular communication, changes in circumstance are identified early and can be addressed before gaps develop. Without this coordination, opportunities can fall through the cracks.

Life changes quickly. A marriage, divorce, new child, or the death of a named beneficiary can all render an existing estate plan outdated, sometimes with significant consequences.

Beneficiary designations determine who inherits your retirement accounts, life insurance policies, and other assets, often regardless of what your will or trust says. Reviewing these decisions regularly with your estate planning attorney ensures that your assets pass to the right people in the right way.

At Sessa & Dorsey, we believe estate planning is an ongoing relationship, not a one-time transaction. If it has been a while since your last review, now is a good time to get in touch.

Life insurance is an important part of protecting your family's financial future, but it works best as part of a broader, well-coordinated estate plan.

Too often, families assume that owning a life insurance policy alongside having a will or revocable trust is enough. Without a comprehensive plan that aligns your policy with your overall estate strategy, important goals can go unrealized and unintended consequences can arise.

At Sessa & Dorsey, we work closely with your insurance, financial, and tax advisors to ensure every piece of your plan is aligned, from your life insurance coverage to your long-term legacy goals.

For families with substantial assets, circumstances rarely stay static. Businesses evolve, investments shift, tax laws change, and family priorities grow more complex over time.

That is why coordination among advisors is so important.

Some of our clients hold quarterly meetings that bring their advisory team together, including financial advisors, accountants, corporate counsel, insurance professionals, and estate planning counsel. These conversations help ensure strategies remain aligned and make it easier to identify when an estate plan should be updated.

Even well-designed plans benefit from regular review as assets grow and planning opportunities change.

If it has been a while since your estate plan was reviewed, we are happy to help. Give us a call at (443) 589-5600 or visit https://www.sessadorsey.com/contact/.
