Frank Zamboni’s 1953 U.S. Patent No. 2,642,679 basically invented the “undo” button for bumpy ice.

The machine scrapes the surface, clears snow and debris, then lays down a thin layer of warm water that freezes into smooth, skate-ready sheet, ideal for faceoffs and slapshots. What once took hours of manual labor could now be done in minutes.

Not only has Zamboni’s invention kept rinks smooth for decades, but it also famously gave us an unforgettable pop-culture moment: a Zamboni driver passionately lip-syncing a love ballad in Happy Gilmore (yes, that “Endless Love” scene).

As the Winter Games begin again, we remember the ingenuity that led to inventions like the Zamboni machine that help maintain pristine ice for the world’s top athletes. ⛸️❄️

What happens when individuals don't understand the law? They can't navigate our system.

Because our legal system was built for lawyers by lawyers, people who can't afford a lawyer are at a big disadvantage and more likely to distrust outcomes.

Let's change that: liftwisconsin.org/legal-navigators

Beware of USPTO subscription email alert scams.

Did you get a USPTO alert email, but never signed up for alerts? That might be part of a new scam targeting trademark applicants and registrants.

Here’s how it works:

✅ Scammers use public information to sign you up for real USPTO alert emails
✅ When you sign up, you receive a confirmation email
✅ Then, scammers call and reference the confirmation email you just got, so they seem like they’re from the USPTO
✅ They claim your application is incomplete and pressure you to pay a fee or share personal information

Don’t fall for it:

❌ The USPTO never calls, emails, or texts to request personal or payment information
❌ The USPTO doesn’t have “officers” or a “Verification Department”
❌ USPTO alert emails are informational only. No follow-up action is required

If you’re unsure whether a message is real, contact the Trademark Assistance Center at 1-800-786-9199 (press 1).
