Do you have a child heading off to college in the fall? Now that they are 18, they are legally an adult. If they get into an unexpected accident or medical emergency, hospitals cannot legally share their condition with you or let you make medical decisions.

Before you pack up the car and check off their dorm essentials, make sure you cross the most important protective measure off your list:

Healthcare Power of Attorney: Allows your adult child to designate someone to make medical decisions on their behalf if they are incapacitated and unable to speak for themselves.

HIPAA Authorization: Gives doctors and hospital staff permission to talk to you and give you medical updates during a crisis.

Melinda Hoey, Attorney: Many of you already know Melinda, who has been anchoring our firm and helping families design comprehensive plans for peace of mind. She is excited to lead this next chapter of growth for our practice!

When she is not serving clients, Melinda enjoys spending time with her family at the lake in Northwest Wisconsin.

Mackenzie McCuskey, Paralegal: Mackenzie earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Legal Studies and Political Science from Winona State University and is known for her approachable communication style, attention to detail, and commitment to helping clients feel informed throughout the legal process.

Outside of work, Mackenzie enjoys reading, working out, spending time outdoors, and caring for her pets.

Olivia See, Legal Assistant: Olivia is currently a student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she is majoring in Economics and Legal Studies with a certificate in Criminal Justice.
