An Arctic front is expected to approach this weekend; now is a good time to begin preparing for the potential of freezing temperatures and winter precipitation. While forecast confidence is still low on exact timing and how cold it may get, early preparation helps reduce impacts if conditions worsen.

• Gather emergency supplies for your home and car
• Check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
• Fuel up vehicles and heating sources
• Protect exposed pipes and sensitive plants

• Continue monitoring the forecast
• Adjust travel plans and prepare to stay off roads

Great pass for homestead exemption!

Proposition 13 would increase the share of a home's value that can't be taxed to pay for public schools, from $100,000 to $140,000. A Tribune calculation shows that the owner of a typical Texas home, worth about $302,000 last year, would have saved about $490 on their school property taxes under the proposed change. These tax increases are brutal, but at least we're getting some relief with these exemptions.

This is exciting news if Texas is able to pass the $140,000 homestead exemption. Fingers crossed!

The largest exemption in property taxes is headed to the Texas House after it was unanimously approved by the state senate.
