Your vote and support matters to me. There has been a huge misinformation campaign targeting the Harris County criminal judges based on fear and emotion, not facts. Unfortunately, as a judge, I am prohibited from commenting on any specific case before me, even if it is to correct lies or factual inaccuracy in reporting about my decisions.* Those of you who know me personally or professionally know that I have used my experiences as both a prosecutor and a defense lawyer to make responsible decisions that are guided by the law and the facts as they are presented to me. I live in this community with my wife and children, and the safety of Harris County is important to me and is factored into every decision that I make. The legislature writes the law, the trial court judges are bound by and must follow that law as written, and the appellate courts determine if the law is appropriate and valid. If the public disapproves of any given law or how it is being applied, that must be taken up with the “rule making” legislators, not the judiciary who are meant to act as neutral “referees” who are bound by the rules set forth by that legislature.
It should come as no surprise to anyone who practices criminal law that I have received the endorsements of every non-partisan organization and bar association, including the Houston Chronicle, Houston Lawyers Association, Association of Women Attorneys, Mexican American Bar Association, The Houston LGBTQ+ Political Caucus, The Texas Gulf Coast Area Labor Federation, and others. I am 1 of only 2 sitting Criminal District Court Judges who is Board Certified in Criminal Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. I have dedicated my entire legal career to the exclusive practice of criminal law, it is my true passion and I take my involvement in the criminal justice system seriously. My opponent is primarily a tax lawyer whose entire Harris County criminal caseload over the course of his entire legal career is fewer than 30 clients (not a single one going to trial), which is a fraction of my daily caseload when I was a prosecutor and is what I might have handled in a busy week as a criminal defense lawyer. Read that again: his entire Harris County criminal law experience is less than what I did in one day as a prosecutor or 1-2 weeks as a defense lawyer over the course of my almost 2 decade career. The citizens of Harris County deserve a criminal District Court judge with meaningful criminal law experience and who thoroughly understands the intricacies of the law relevant to the specific bench. A criminal District Court judge’s main purpose is to maintain the integrity of the system, which is only possible with meaningful relevant experience.
