A completely unserious list of things I take very seriously: BUSINESS OWNER EDITION

1. The difference between “okay,” “ok,” and “k.” Three entirely different messages.

2. People who tell stories out of chronological order. I’m going to need you to establish a timeline.

3. The audacity of a meeting that could’ve been a two-line email.

4. Having a cute notebook that I’m too scared to actually write in.

5. When someone says “long story short” and proceeds to tell a long story anyway.

6. Having 17 versions of the same document named FINAL, FINAL 2, FINAL ACTUAL, and FINAL FINAL USE THIS.

7. The moral dilemma of whether to use an exclamation mark in a professional email when I’ve already used three.

8. Wondering if the person reading this is going to tell me what they take way too seriously.

PSA for all the creators doing brand collabs this holiday season 📢

That “we’d love to collaborate with you!” email might be exciting but can we talk about the contract attached to it? 👀

After reviewing my fair share of influencer and ambassador agreements, I can tell you that the payment amount is rarely the only thing worth negotiating.

Here are five things I’d look at VERY carefully before signing:

💁🏻‍♀️ Who actually owns the content?

You planned, filmed and edited that video. But did you agree to one campaign or give the brand unlimited rights to use it forever without paying you another cent?

Those are two VERY different deals.

💁🏻‍♀️ How far does exclusivity go?

Not promoting a direct competitor for 30 days? Reasonable. Not working with anyone in the same industry for an entire year? Now we have a problem.

Especially when “competitor” isn’t clearly defined.

💁🏻‍♀️ What happens if the brand cancels?

You’ve shot the content, hired a videographer and spent days editing. The brand scraps the campaign. Do you still get paid?

Without a cancellation fee (or kill fee), you might be left fighting for that money.

💁🏻‍♀️ How many revisions are included?

I have a particular issue with contracts that promise “reasonable revisions” without defining reasonable.

The brand might think eight rounds of edits are reasonable. You probably won’t. Put a number on it.

💁🏻‍♀️ When does the money hit your account?

A $5,000 collaboration sounds great until you notice the Net 90 payment terms.

That’s potentially three months of waiting after completing your obligations. Meanwhile, your bills are still due on time.

Here’s what I want creators to understand: having a large following doesn’t automatically mean you have a well-protected business.

Brands negotiate contracts with their interests in mind. You should too.
