As families gear up for a new school year, we want to help students stay safe on their way to and from campus. No matter how they travel, a few clear precautions can make a big difference.
Walking to school? Use sidewalks when available, cross only at designated crosswalks, and make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the road. Walking with a group adds an extra layer of safety.
Riding a bike? A properly fitted helmet is essential. Encourage students to ride with traffic, stop fully before crossing streets, and choose routes with lighter traffic when possible.
Taking the bus? Students should wait several feet back from the curb, board only after the bus comes to a complete stop, and avoid walking directly in front of or behind the bus without confirming the driver sees them.
Getting dropped off? Drivers should follow school zone speed limits and obey all posted procedures. Never pass a bus actively loading or unloading children.
Teen drivers? It's worth revisiting the basics: seatbelts for every passenger, no devices while driving, and strict attention to posted speed limits.
