As we go into the long weekend, have you ever wondered WHY we celebrate "Labor Day"

We did and this is what we found.

Labor Day is a federal holiday in the United States celebrated on the first Monday of September to honor the American labor movement and the contributions of workers.

Meaning and History

Origins: The holiday began in the late 19th century during the Industrial Revolution when workers pushed for better conditions, like an eight-hour workday.

First March: New York City held the first unofficial Labor Day on September 5, 1882, with a parade and a picnic.

Federal Holiday: President Grover Cleveland signed it into law on June 28, 1894.

And here we thought it was just the end of summer!

Happy Labor Day Weekend!!

Hedge-fund billionaire John Overdeck took to the witness stand last week to explain that he had always shared his riches with his wife, Laura Overdeck. That included the hundreds of millions of dollars in pay that he put into a joint account during their marriage, he said.

“In fact, she was able to withdraw $75 million the day before she filed for divorce,” said Overdeck, co-founder of Two Sigma, the quant-trading powerhouse.

Overdeck didn’t flinch when he mentioned the figure, just one of the many staggering sums being bandied about in a blockbuster divorce trial under way in a New Jersey courthouse. The trial could result in one of the largest divorce settlements ever and shake up the power struggle atop Two Sigma, where John Overdeck has been locked in a bitter feud with his co-founder, David Siegel.

John Overdeck is offering to give his estranged wife $723 million to settle their split. Laura Overdeck says their marital assets should include his stake in Two Sigma, which her attorney estimates is worth $6.2 billion. She wants 35% of that, or $2.17 billion.

Referrals aren't the only compliment we receive from our satisfied clients.

One of the biggest compliments we receive from our clients is how "real" we keep it.

Our attorneys don't use legal mumbo jumbo at every turn. We break legal concepts down so that our clients really understand all of the implications of every action.

They appreciate our no-nonsense approach to handling discovery and inventories. They recognize how we try to work collaboratively to ensure a positive outcome for all, while minimizing costs the whole time.

The last thing an initial consultation or prospective client needs is an attorney sitting across from them reciting legal code to them in one of the most traumatic moments of their lives.

If you want a law firm that "reads the room" and puts things in language you can truly understand, we are the firm for you.

Come see why we are different.

Divorce is probably the bulk of our client cases.

Which means, 7 out of 10 initial consultations are related to divorce or "uncoupling" in our practice.

After our clients sign the divorce papers, there's both a feeling of relief and sadness, because of the finality of the marriage.

Some of our clients "celebrate" with photoshoots, parties, dinners, etc., while others quietly close this chapter in their lives.

Regardless of how someone chooses to commemorate their divorce, it had us wondering if there are any traditions around the world to symbolize or provide closure to divorce.

Here's what we found:

The Get Unknotting (Jewish Traditions): While a Get is the official legal document of divorce in Jewish law, modern progressive communities incorporate healing rituals. Partners may take a thick rope tied with small knots and take turns untying them. Each unknotted segment represents a memory, allowing them to explicitly state aloud the good and bad aspects they are releasing.

Tashlich Water Release: Derived from the Jewish New Year ritual of casting away sins, some individuals adapt this by writing painful marital memories or regrets on water-soluble paper. They place the paper into a flowing river or a ritual pool (mikvah), watching the ink dissolve to symbolize forgiveness and clean slate energy.

Ceremony of Hope (Unitarian Universalism): This formalized church ritual mimics the structure of a wedding but serves the opposite purpose. Conducted by a minister, the divorcing spouses stand before the same friends and family who witnessed their wedding. They openly apologize for any pain caused during the marriage and receive a collective blessing for their individual futures.

Ring Smashing Gavel Ceremonies: Popularized in modern Japanese culture by specialized divorce planners, couples host formal gatherings for friends and family. The climax of the ceremony involves the couple using a large wooden mallet or gavel to crush their wedding bands together, physically altering the metal to prove the marriage cannot be put back together.

Cord-Cutting Ceremonies: Rooted in alternative spiritual and secular practices, individuals use physical cords or ribbons to represent emotional ties. In front of a small supportive circle, they physically cut the cord with scissors to represent breaking the energetic connection to their former spouse.

Threshold Crossing: This structural ritual involves physically mapping out a space with a designated boundary line, like a doorway or a ribbon on the ground. The individual states their intentions for their new life, then physically steps over the threshold to leave the identity of a married person behind.

What are your thoughts on a "Divorce Ceremony" for symbolic closure of a divorce?

As we go into the weekend, always remember the simple sentiment quoted below:

"Children don't need perfect parents. They need peaceful parents."

New schedules and new normals can sometimes cause friction or chaos.

Instead of adding to that chaos, choose peace.

It will make all the difference.
